Ignore all the horror stories you're getting about pain. They do numb you, after that it is boring - bring a diskman/walkman to listen too. It will taste bad while they do it - but they have ways to keep you from tasting anything.
Those feeling pain waited WAY too long - they had massive infections & THAT is what hurt. The root canal takes the pain away, but they forget that. If the infection is severe, it is hard (impossible at times) to get you numb - again they waited too long. I see people who have had pain for 6 months - where were they 6 months ago?
The other horror story tell has to tell you how bad life treats them.
After the root canal - the pain will be gone very soon. The tooth will still feel normal when you bite - it won't feel dead.

All in all a root canal will hurt more than a filling. What happens with a root canal is the dentist will have to use a small tooth drill to get into the roots of your tooth. Once in the roots he will remove the nerves from the tooth and apply a filler to keep bacteria from getting in there. Once that is done a temporary 'cap' will be put on your tooth until a permanent cap can be put on.
If your dentist feels that you need a root canal be sure that you try to get your parents to take you for another opinion. Sometimes dentists can be more interested in saving a tooth that is beyond saving for the money (root canals are EXPENSIVE).

I have had three root canals - they are expensive - if possible, go to an "endodontist" - they specialized in root canals. I did my first 2 there b/c I am a big baby when it comes to my teeth - I wanted to be put to sleep (and I ain't a kid). I felt no pain - it was amazing! The third root canal, I had 2 toddlers and let a dentist do the root canal so I wouldn't have to travel so far - worst mistake I ever made - it was hell - he couldn't clear it up after 2 months; I had to go back to the endodontist & have them fix what the dentist did - there was a bit of pain, but nothing like at the dentist's, and it got finished instead of being pulled. Really try to find an endodontist to do yours :-)

I've had 3 root canals and I don't think they hurt any more than a regualr filling at the time. However you will notice a soreness when the anaesthetic wears off. That will last about 6-8 hours and then you'll be fine!

Don't you worry. Root canals are not that bad. They numb you the same way as they do for a filling, so you shouldn't feel a thing. The worst part about them? Very boring!

I had to have one a couple of months ago.
It does not hurt if your dentist numbs you correctly, if not you will feel it, afterwards you might need to take some painkillers as it is like you have been banging your head up a brick wall.
You should look after your teeth, 14 is a young age to have a root canal.

You will be fine. Think of it as decay deeper in your tooth. So a local injection to numb your tooth. Then the dentist will drill in using a long drill, clean it out and fill it,
It may just be uncomfortable and no good dentist will hurt you .
If not sorted you will get an abcess and believe you me, that REALLY hurts. So best to get it sorted as you are doing!

Well, it means that they'll extract the root(nerve) from your gum, just what I mentioned before. It doesn't hurt at all, cause you get anestezized
