There are a few different locations that would numb a certain area of the mouth. For a molar they inject you at the back of your jaw and then they wait for the anesthetic to take effect, if it doesn't work then they'll inject the gum surrounding the tooth. I don't remember the areas for the rest of the mouth. (the reason all the way in the back is that the anesthesia gets a nerve and about half of the mouth gets numb)

It all depends on what teeth you will be having treated.
For a top tooth they will inject (called an infiltration) close to the tooth to be treated and it is not in your gum!!! it is in your mucous membrane which is further up (can't really explain that in words very well)

For a bottom tooth they can do the same thing or they can do what is called a Block and this is towards the back of your mouth (behind where your teeth are) which will numb all your bottom teeth on one side plus your gum on the tongue side and half your tongue and also half your bottom lip.

They stick the needle (usually just one) of anesthetic into the base of your gums to numb your mouth, then they make sure it worked and drill a little of your decayed enamel away from the tooth, they clean the space, they fill it, let it harden and may file it down so your bite is shaped normally. All in all, not bad, just gotta avoid food and drink for a few hours. A-F-I, A-F-I, woo hoo!
