The second answer has it right. As to why he said that, I have a question that got a lot of answers. It's currently in voting as I was unable to determine which one was the right one. Check it out (and vote too please!)

...yes, 'my God, my God, Why have your forsaken me'..

As far as why he said that....even though it is true it was a fulfillment of Psalms..and he was taking the sin of the world upon him...

No doubt the whole time he was in custody he was silently praying to his father, to keep open the lines of communication to his Father, and no doubt God was speaking to his mind in encouragement....would not you?

It is possible that just before Jesus died, he did *not* get a response from God..It would have been totally out of character for God not to give his son emotional support......so Jesus ask 'Why?'

Did you ever stop to think about heartbreak...and how you would feel...watching your child suffer? That there are unbearable moments even for God? That was, no doubt, the greatest pain the Father has ever felt.

The only clear meaning of this statement is "My God, My God, why hast thouu forsaken me", one of the friends has used the means "I was spared for this purpose" but that meaning is imposed or just try to fit Jesus' alleged crucifiction into something which Christians want to believe in...

Eli Eli, Lama Sabbachtani are Hebrew words, supposedly the last words uttered by Jesus Christ on the cross. Eli means MY LORD or MY God in Hebrew, in which EL is God. Ironically in Arabic the word is also from the same root word ILah. Allah is a conjugation of the two words AL or THE in Arabic and ILAH or god, any god. In Arabic or Hebrew when you add an i to the end of some words it becomes MY.

So, Jesus was literally crying out to God to help him. Eli Eli, My Lord or My God, Lama? WHY HAVE YOU -- Sabbachtani or FORSAKEN ME? Why have you abandoned me.

These are the words of a man in distress, who is running out of hope. In my personal belief at this point Jesus perhaps fainted in response to his plea to God Almighty. He was later taken down and put in a cool cave, where after having rested, he woke up and removed the stone that was put on the mouth of the cave, came out and got the clothes of a gardener, and went to visit his disciples, who assumed Jesus had arisen from his death.

In those days there was not a formal doctor present to declare that the victim was in fact dead, as they do now for death penalty cases. Besides, Jesus was not buried in a grave, but his body was placed in a large cave of a rich man. Jesus obviously would not want this information to be known to the authorities who would crucify him again, so he ate the food his disciples provided him and spent some time with them while his wounds healed and later was raised up to God or immigrated away to some foreign land.

Note that crucifixion takes a long time for a person to die. It took people as long as one month if water and food was provided to them on the cross. Mostly it took at least three days to die on the cross due to thirst and exposure to the sun. Many relatives provided water and food to their loved one on the cross, which unfortunately prolonged their death. Both men who were crucified with Christ were alive and had to be killed by the roman soldier. Had Jesus not fainted, he would have been killed too perhaps. Jesus was taken down in three hours. He was crucified at 3:00 and taken down at or around 6:00 PM on Good Friday, which is not enough time for a man to die on a cross. This is what made crucifixion a dreaded punishment as a person died a slow and prolonged death.

The roman soldiers knew that their Roman Governor had not wanted Jesus to be killed, so they may have looked the other way and did the will of their Governor for all one knows IF they realized that he was not completely dead as yet or may have taken a bribe to take away the "body". Normally the crucified men stayed on the cross as vultures and crows ate the dead bodies or they just rotted on the cross and disintegrated.

The disciples themselves did not witness the crucifixion as they had run off. When they saw Jesus emerge alive, after having heard that he had died, they believed it was a miracle and at that point they truly believed in Jesus and had a conversion at heart.

It is all very feasible and practical. In those days there was no medical check up of who had died. When Jesus was taken down, it was almost going to be sundown, so his family had to go to the Worship, so they probably did not spend that much time with him. Even if someone saw any signs of life, they would not have reported it to the Romans, who could have surely killed him.

This is my take on what happened. After that, God Alone knows the truth.
