Any dog is a good dog just as long as they are brought up right.
But if your thinking about a doberman I'd say yes they are fantastic dogs.
Good luck

yes, dobermans are very good dogs.
I agree, there are no bad dogs, just bad owners.
And, no two dogs, even same breed, same litter, are the same. They each have their own personalities.
With that in mind, dobermans, in general, are a protective breed. They tend to attach to one person or small family unit rather fiercely. They don't seem to do well in big, ever changing groups.
Also, dogs are a social creature. As such, dobermans are not the type of dog you want to leave chained up outside.
A poodle will eventually turn mean on a chain.
A doberman has the muscle to back it up.
Aw, another point: several dog breeds I've worked with don't seem to realize how strong they are or how fragile we, as human, are. Good training and positive feedback from owner can easily curb that.
Nearly every doberman I have ever met had a comedic side. Add on how ammazingly smart they are and... WOW!
Many of them grinned... litterly. Looked like a vicious snarl, but they were just grinning from ear to ear.
I knew another who would steel the covers right off of his owner 6am every morning.
Another one had figured out how to turn a hose on the cat.
Anyway and anyhow, love dobies!

An after thought:
Keep in mind, you get out of a dog 10 times what you put into them.
If you love him and kind to him, he will worship you and give you all the world he can.
Hurt him, be mean to him, and, eventually, you'll get bitten... and you'll deserve it.

My dog is a doberman / german shepherd mix, and people thought I was nuts adopting him from a rescue group. Well, my Sampson is not only smart, he's obedient, funny, loving and sweet. He never has to be told twice about anything. There were no potty training issues - he just knew. He is very attentive, and looks right at you when you speak to him. He is also very protective of me and the household, but a 3 mo old kitten I am fostering can curl up right under his chin and sleep in peace. As long as you know something about the dog if you are getting an adult or raise your puppy with love and kindness, I think you will have a wonderful pet.

Dobermans are awesome dogs in the right hands with the right training. Recently a dog visited the store I work at and he had a LARGE area stitched up - 230 in the morning he was acting agitated. The people let him out and when the noise stopped he'd been stabbed and a trail of blood went from the kitchen window to the back of the property. He saved the family from who knows what fate. This dog was NOT vicious - I was hand feeding him treats and he was giving 'kisses'. But following instinct to protect his family he was injured himself and bore no resentment at all. Happy and healthy despite all the stitches.
I've had a few of them and been around many others - very good dogs.

Yes. As others have said, domestic dogs are, by nature, sweet and wonderful. An animal only turns mean, vicious, etc. by its owner who either trains it to be such or treats it so viciously that the animal eventually becomes aggressive.
Case in point, I own two pit bulls. I know the consensus out there is that they're awful animals, mean and cruel, but I can't think of anything further from the truth. Both of my dogs are the sweetest, most loving dogs I've ever had (and I've had several dogs in my lifetime).
Dobbies are, I believe, extremely loyal animals, protective of their masters and loving.
As with any dog, especially those bread to be a watchdog, make sure you get one from a reputable breeder; someone who would never think of raising a hand to an animal.
Consult your veterinarian, too, to find out from him what he thinks. He may also know of some reputable breeders in your area. Also, there are plenty of books about raising Dobermans available, either on the market or in your local library. Do your homework before buying any animal. Trust me on this. I once bought a Siberian husky without doing my homework and, though she was one of the greatest dogs I've ever had, she was pretty high-maintenance. If I had done my homework, I would've been prepared for all her natural exuberance.

I believe that just like humans, each animal has individual personalities. There are good, some bad, and many in need of training. I have never had a doberman but I used to raise AKC Chows I have had various types of dogs through out my life and many other animals including a pet skunk I rescued from death when it was a baby.

I am a behavorial trainer and work with a doberman rescue.
They are great dogs but not great for every owner.
You need to be able to devote time to you dog and you need to be able to train you dog.You need to be the one in charge or you will have problems. Dobes are very smart and are a very assertive dominant dog. If you are not leader of the pack they will be. People are not happy when the dog is the leader.
If you are looking at getting a doberman please be sure you have time to devote to training calsses. I HIGHLY recommend them to anyone with a dobe. Also make sure the parents have been tested for VonWilldebrans Disease it is a bleeding disorder simmalar to hemophlia in people. Look out for cardio myothopy heart problems are common and keep in mind cancer is very common in this breed. Everything from lymphoma to ostoscaroma. I just lost a 5 year old male to cancer.
They are wonderful dogs but take time and patience. But with that they are one of the best breeds I have ever owned. I have had dobes for 17 years.

Dobermans are good dogs, but you have to make sure that you get one from a reputable breeder. Dogs that are not well bred can have a problem where the brain grows too big for the skull. It can result in mental problems for the dog, and problems for the owner.

Good dogs, bad dogs do not exist! Dogs are like children in many ways. They'll try your patience and demand attention. Should they feel their efforts are not rewarded with your attention ... They'll play you up, same as children ... Better bad attention than no attention at all.
Dobermans are great dogs, if not for the faint hearted! They demand a lot of rigorous training and exercise. They are also pretty independent and like to rule the roost! So you have to make sure that your dog understands that you are top dog not him/her.
Dobermans need trained from an early age (Like most dogs) But in their case, the cute puppy you may have notcied will gropw up sooner than you would expect and so will his strength! So make sure your Dobie knows to behave before he grows too big!
Training him/her to walk on the leash is a must. He/she must learn to answer your commands the minute you express them. It's not that hard, just take a lot of time and dedication.
With a Dobie i would always urge owners to beware of people/children who may come to him/her too quickly. You know how kids can run to a dog, take him/her by complete surprise.
Your training must also involve socialising your Dobie with friends, neighbours, children etc. Always supervise because dogs are far better than we are when it comes to immediate reactions! You may wonder why your dog doesn't seem too keen/hate someone you've known for a while, think such person is quite nice. My advice is ... Trust your dog! He/she knows who is good for him/her and for you!
Finally if you live in the UK remember your Dobie should be muselled to go out. Please do not buy a tight musel as too many owners do. Instead buy the new nylong ones, they are a lot more comfortable for your dog to wear, allows him/her to pant.
Best wishes

A dobie. is a wonderful dog. I had three growing up. The only draw back is when you get one from somebody who may have either abused it or neglected it. My dobies were loyal loving dogs despite their back rounds. They are great with children but also very protective of their family when need be.
Please remember that studies have stated that dobies have a tendency to snap their personality as they become a senior dog as their brain does not stop growing and the pressure causes adverse behavior. Sometimes the behavior can be a more docile dog or the flip side a more aggressive dog.
Please do more research before you decide to get a dobie.
