So in the old days they had a simple answer: they put the ring on the third finger which they believed had a vein, artery or nerve (a sort of a USB cable) running directly to the heart. And as the left hand is a bit closer to the heart than the right, they placed engagement and wedding rings on the third finger of the left hand. (Actually, during some periods in the past, the ring was worn on the right hand; a practice that continues to this day in some cultures, since the right hand is considered more righteous.)

The tradition wedding band originated with the Romans, who believed that a vein extended from the 4th finger of the left hand directly to the heart. It became customary at Roman wedding ceremonies to place an iron band on the 4th finger to symbolize the ''capture'' of the loved ones heart.Of course,it is a custom that is still practice today in one form or another in many countries throughout the world.

The reason its on that finger is that's the finger that's closes to the heart. The blood flow is closest in your left arm, which is why if your nurse is smart she'll put your IV in the left arm. And on the left hand, the ring finger is closest to the heart.
