Either a) don't have one (best if you're just having the two of them stand up) or b) have two. It's your wedding; do it the way you want.

Some people pick the person who is closest to them and who they have known for the longest. Sometimes it is a sister or relative.

While there is nothing keeping you from having two maids of honor, since it is your wedding, there is a way to determine which one should take the maid of honor spot.

The best way is to pick the one who has more time and the desire to help manage you and assist you with the wedding. Maid of honor is in charge of getting you to the wedding altar and running interferance with any questions or problems on the wedding day. Maid of honor signs the marriage certificate as witness. I like this criteria because it doesn't force you to chose who is closest to you, but instead what is going to be the most convenient for them.

Hope this helps.

If there's a relative who would be an appropriate choice (sister or sister-in-law) you can claim to your friends that you were obligated to choose her, and then choose both of your friends as bridesmaids.
Or, just have two maids of honor. There's a lot for the maid of honor to do, so better to have the two of them work together!

If you really want them both to be your maid of honor, and you can't choose one over the other, just have two maids of honor! There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. You'll just have to figure out how to divide their duties. Talk to them and see what they each want to do (give a toast, plan bachelorette party, hold your bouquet during the ceremony, sign the license, etc.). Congratulations!

Have one as a Maid of Honor and the other as a Matron of Honor. Typically the older of the two should be the Matron.

Select the one who is shorter than you, who has a darker complexion than you and who doesn't look very prettier than you.

Otherwise she will look highlighted in the ceremony.

That's how we normally select the bride's maid.
