For the sake of exercise, I always try and walk up stairs rather than take the lift/elevator. What about going down the stairs? Is it any better than walking on level ground? Or is it actually easier?

Walking down stairs is definately easier than walking on level ground because gravity is sort of helping you move. Now, walking down stairs is better for your health than taking the lift because you are moving. This means that you are burning more calories than someone standing in the lift. Keep on walking and stay on the move. You will see the benefits of it.

Everytime you climb up a step you carry ( lift )your body`s weight by the height of step. That is exercise. You roll down the steps using gravity not your energy.

Both are good. But, walking downstairs tends to put more strain on your knees & ankles.
