no one is pulling my chain and certainly not fully it, lettuce has opiates in it, if you have trouble sleeping then you can chew the base of it and that'll help you.

why does everyone think i'm trying to get high from this? i've heard on a number of ocasions that the brown stuff at the base of the lettuce is caused by some sort of opiate that is in the lettuce, i know allso that when you heat some things that different componants start to seperate i wondered if this was the case with lettuce, thats all.

If this were true, don't you think everybody would be addicted to lettuce by now?

It is certainly possible to fry it: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2006/01/11/FDGJTGHRQG1.DTL

As for the opiate business, http://www.straightdope.com/columns/050107.html

Opium is normally produced from the opium poppy which is an entirely different species. Many plants produce toxins in order to protect themselves from being damaged by insects and other pests. It seems that wild lettuce may contain some kind of toxin in its milky juice - they are called lactucin and lactucopicrin and are not opiates as such.

Religion has often been called 'the opiate of the people'. This may be because of the frequently heard words 'Lettuce pray.'

Its called kilt lettuce. But it is actually not fried in a pan. You take a bowl of leaf lettuce and chopped up onions (scallions-Green onions) and pour hot bacon (helps if there is still pieces of bacon left in it) grease over the lettuce. It is great with soup beans. Try it you might like it.

I stirfry lettuce occasionally. It tastes ok, but needs to be in and out of the pan quite quickly.

I thought I was the only one with weird taste.

I often eat boiled egg, cheese and lettuce toasted sandwiches
and always feel good afterwards.

It hasn't hurt me

I think someone is fully your chain!

You can fry lettuce, but it goes very limp and doesn't taste nice.

Man, you are desperate, if you resort to frying lettuce.

However I'm all in favour of experimentation, why don't you just try it?

Ask the Chinese, they fry everything, and then have the cheek to tell you it's healthy.

Why don't you tie a plastic bag around your head and get high?

When you deep fry it it turns all brown and crunchy, and you don't really wanna eat it.
