I don't have a fax machine, i am using the built in Microsoft Fax console, but can never send a fax. My comuter has a built in fax modem. My computer makes a tone, but of course I don't have a phone line hooked up because I am using cable to access internet. So, Do I also need to pug in a phone line then? If so can I just hook line straight from wall jack to computer? Also, when I type in the number to be dialed do I put in dashes or spaces?

Yes I have read directions and combed the net, it ONLY talks about sending/receiving. I know how to do that. It does not explain hardware hook up or components needed.

For starters, make sure you're plugging your cable from your wall to the correct jack in your modem. One usually has a phone icon - don't use that one for the wall connection. Use that for an actual phone.

If your hear a dial tone from your speakers when you try to fax someone, then that's a good thing - your fax is trying to start up and dial. If you don't hear a dial tone, again check your plugs. It may even help to check the wall outlet as well, since that may be part of the problem.

As for dialing, you can usually go either way with dashes or no dashes. Just be sure to use area codes where necessary.

Now be warned - sometimes sending a fax over a cable modem won't work out. I've had that told to me once, and it turned out that it did work in my case. But then recently, I tried to fax and they didn't go through all the way. I had to do some fancy trickery to get things right again, but it worked out in the end.

BTW, the link below is from Microsoft's website. It may help with some minor usage and troubleshooting.

you decide on fax utility, and a modem. Plug your telephone line into the modem, and configure the fax utility to respond to incoming calls. whilst a fax gadget connects to it, the utility will convert the incoming fax right into a picture report, which you would be able to print. To deliver a fax, the utility will convert the output right into a fax image, dial the telephone selection you supply it, and deliver it to a fax gadget.
