What is the different? Big different, may be like English and German.
Chinese is not by phonic like English and many other language. They are pictorial and have 5 tones. There are 9 basic stroke which can form many many words. You basically have to recongnised all of them.
Allow me to give you an example: Zhong.
Zhong - (first tone) Bell or clock.
Zhong / (2nd tone) use with the first tone, to mean all kind.
Zhong > (3rd tone) swell,
Zhong ` (4th tone) heavy, or to plant.
In writing, they may also look alike when they sounds alike, but mean different things. Or they may not look alike, but sounds alike and mean different things.
Japanese are a mix of both phonic and pictorial. Some words are similar, some may be different sounds but mean the same.
People has been saying Japanese economy is at it's peak, and may be falling, and China has yet to reach her full potential. But I think learning a language should be for interest, and also need to learn their culture.

Right now i am learning Japanese myself and the grammar is a little bit hard. My classmates who are learning Japanese with me are chinese and they all tell me that Chinese is a lot more simple, but the only difficult about the Chinese is the characters which are over 10000 to memorize so to write and read it perfectly it may take a bit long, but many more people around the world speak Chinese, so if you learn it it will be very benficial for you.
good luck, they are both great languages.

Japanese and Chinese? Difference? These two languages are more different than English and Russian. The script, however, has many similarities. I think you should take Mandarin Chinese, there's a lot of business oppurtunity in China these day, you can get a good job.

It depends on where you live, if in America, you will need none of the two I suppose, in business world all Japanese or Chinese speak English, if for fun may be Japanese, but Chinese have the biggest number of people in the world.
