It depends on the dog and the groomer! Puppies should be groomed by a professional groomer so they get used to it, hence less trouble when you want them groomed when they're grown up.
You should be careful about groomers too! Some groomers will sedate your dog (They should never do so, not unless you consent to it first) simply because it makes their jobs easier! So if you want to feel reassured before leaving your precious little dog with a groomer ... Do some homework! Find out about the services they offer, quality etc. Always check their diploma as well! Many people open grooming parlours when they are not fully qualified. A fully qualified groomer will have be properly insured as well.
Although groomers really prefer it when you leave your dog to them ... I would always make a point of being there first session. Some groomers will tel you they'd rather you didn't but then it's your dog! You have every right to see how things go, avoids you getting told later on that your dog needed sadted (When in fact he/she probably didn't).
Will our furkids mind if they look ugly? Well i don't think it would bother too much but when you keep long haired dogs ... You really need to keep their coats groomed regulalry to avoid problems.
I have to say ... I have yet to see an ugly dog !!!
Best wishes

If the grooming is being done by a good and professional dog groomer, it is a pleasant experience for most dogs. They make sure that they handle animals in a gentle manner and are aware of the strokes that a dog responds positively to, and which he doesn't like. I guess your shihtsuh is feeling pretty happy now in the warmer season with less hair, since she will be keeping cool a lot better. Beauty is only in the eyes of the human beings. The dog's happy as long as he's healthy and comfortable in his own skin.

if the owners keep up with brushing in between going to the groomer and the groomer actually interacts with the dog instead of just plopping it around to groom it, they usually do.
the key is that the owner shouldn't feel bad, guilty or anxiety when you drop the dog off at the groomer. they don't know how to take it and they definitely pick up on it, so then they associate going to the groomers with negative vibes from you...hence, don't enjoy the visit.
but if you feel good about taking the dog to the groomer and you like your groomer and are friendly when you go, then the dog will most likely enjoy it.
the same goes for going to the vet.

My Tzu likes being cut but the bath is another thing. She just stands there with her head down like she is so humiliated. As far as minding if they are ugly, when she is shaggy or dirty her personality doesn't change. She still plays and cuddles. But when I pick her up from the groomer she has bows in her hair and she really does seem to prance a little. I think they feel better clean and trimmed. I do!

it depends on the dog and how much they like other people besides you. when I groom my dog and cut her hair, (she is a long hair chiuahah) she loves it, when I took her to the groomer they damn near had to sedate her. And i think that your dog will enjoy being cool for the summer, my dog does.
