My daughter-in-law spent tons of money on my grandaughters first birthday. She fell asleep in the middle of opening presents. It was ridiculous.

Her second birthday, she would've remembered better. But, she recently just turned three and there wasn't near as big of a deal made of it. She would've remembered that 3 year old birthday more than the first one.

I personally think the first birthday should be for immediate family with lots of pictures. As they get older the bigger the birthday becomes the more it means to the child.

forget it completely - at three make something nice but not too big because it will be overwheleming for him. If the party is for you - acknowledging this miricle that you have then don't make it a birthday party cause it just lowers the emotional impact.

A three have a few friends and don't let anyone bring presents _ kids always wind up going beserk, just have areally fun day will cake and games

The baby probably won't remember, but will be able to enjoy a larger bd party more at 2 than 1. That is a parents choice, you will probably have pictures of both events anyhow. Just enjoy.

I celebrated each of my children's birthdays. I didn't go all out on the parties, kept it minimized to immediate family. They are my children and I wanted them and I made sure to celebrate their birth every year. They don't remember the b-day parties when they were little but have pictures to rely on. Each of their b-day parties gave me a life time of memories.
