The questions all depends on what you want to do with the camera. If you are doing fine portraiture, then the 8 megapixel is preferred. However, you if you are doing children, sports, or anything where the chances of printing a 20x30 are slim you only need a 6 megapixel.

Obviously 6 megapixels is a lot cheaper than 8 megapixels.
