I guess people think that it is wind down time for the child. They can sit and relax with you before putting them down. I read to my son in the afternoon all the time. I would do it whenever you desire to. The most important thing is that you are reading to your child. A child that is read to everyday does much better in school then a child that is not read to and it is great bonding time with you and your child.

Emphasis tends to be placed on bedtime reading because :

a) it helps a child relax and fall asleep easier
b) it is a time when working parents are available to read with their kids

It doesn't stop anyone reading at other times!

Reading is encouraged any time of the day. At bedtime children especially toddlers benefit from a routine so they know what to expect next. They think ok I had my bath now the book, I am going to go to bed next. It is also a good way to relax a child and get their body ready to sleep.

I will say you should read books at any time. Books increase vocabulary and imagination.

At bedtime is because you can use as part of the routine and let kids to settle down.

I can see what you mean. I read to my daughter when I feel like it, not when people tell me is the best time. I just make sure the stories I read during the day are more exciting than the ones I read at night so she won't fall asleep.

I've never heard anyone say not to read to your child at other times during the day. As an educator and parent we say "Read!Read! Read!" ..... As far as a bed time story , that just helps set a calm routine to transition from playing to sleeping.

It's just a nice way to wind down and include in nighttime routine. My daughter occasionally wants to hear a story during the day and that's perfectly fine, we encourage story time whenever she wants (within reason ofcourse)

I never thought reading at bedtime was a good idea. Bedtime is bedtime, not reading time.

Reading anytime is great.

All my children are very well spoken and well read and
are now teenagers.

I read to my children from day dot anytime of the day
or night.

I think when children are less active at night it is
easier to grab their attention when reading them a story.

I didn't realize that it was pushed so much... although my son is advanced 2 grades above his level (he's 6) and already reading chapter books. I did read to him every night, but also any other time he brought me a book.
.....maybe it stays fresher in their memories so their brain is still working on it when they sleep?
