I was in the same situation. But now we have gotten past meeting and it's great! I love her even more! Yes, you have to be careful and you should take things slowly, but I think 5 years is already a long time. Does the person know your feelings? If its a mutual feeling then the next step is to meet! I was so scared that if she saw me she wouldn't like me that much, in fact I never wanted to tell I fallen for her while we hadn't met...but I couldn't contain myself...it was just too much. Sure people will say that a relationship like this is not real and even you might be doubtful. But I'm talking from experience. Its fine to be scared, you want to protect yourself from getting hurt but also you don't want to spoil the friendship.
But if its evident that there is a mutual feeling, if you can talk openly but without making things uncomfotable for either of you and If you know that the person feels the same, then air it out and make it clear... and prepare to take the next step!
If you don't try, you will never know!

well if you've never met then REALITY CHECK you are not involved you are just communicating don't make it into something it is not try not to push it and make the other person uncomfortable. If you have been talking five years and not met yet then whats the problem are you not who/what you have portrayed to her is she not what she claimed to be? arrange a meeting as long as both of you are of legal age preferably in a public place and if nothing else provide some closure AND possibly open a new chapter in your relationship.
