Depends whether you believe in Evolution or Genesis:
Evolution: Gradually from a dinosaur creatures evolved each one looking more and more like a chicken until one almost chicken except for one mutation laid an egg inside of which was the creature with the last mutation needed to be a chicken. Therefore, for evolution it was the egg.
Genesis: God created the animals and fowl. God did not create eggs. Therefore, Genesis says it was the chicken.
