I've always been a fan of the Canon Powershot series, but if I were to buy one now for under $500, I'd get the Casio EXILIM Z1000. It's 10MP, has a huge LCD screen, and is very small.

Make sure you get one with image stabilization and an OPTICAL zoom of over 5x. Sony and Panasonic have some good ones out right now. The newest ones. Make sure you get the image stabilization. If you don't, you'll wish you did. Good luck!

Canon S3-IS. It has 6mp, 12x lens, allows wideangle/tele adapters, excellent noise reduction, good shutter alertness (less lag) and large apperture compared to other cams. costs < $500 in the US
