my cats are over a year old and have recently started to shed really bad, could there be an underlying problem or is this normal?

Cats shed in the summer, sometimes a better diet can improve shedding. Brushing your cats will work too.... Lots of animals loose their winter coats in the summer.

This is a great site on cats in general....

This is very normal. They shed their heavy winter coat in late spring for a lighter cooler summer coat. In the fall they'll shed a bit if their summer coat for a thicker warmer winter coat. All you can do really is to just brush them daily. I've heard that the "Ionic Pet Brush" is great tool for keeping the shedding down. You may have seen them advertised on TV. I'm waiting to see the ad again so I can get one for my cats. I hope this helps. Good luck.

More then likely it's merely because they are shedding their summer coat. It's getting hot and most cats do this. Mine are shedding rather badly too.

I wouldn't worry about it unless you start seeing bald spots. Then that would be too much hair loss.

It's probably nothing to worry about. When the weather changes they start to shed more/less.
