It means, when you were depended on (responsibility was passed on to you), you blew it; you let the team down, something you, Chevycobalt, just don't do!
Sometimes when someone thinks you "dropped the ball", it's because they didn't want to do something themselves, and are looking for someone to blame (passing of the royal buck).

It means that when you are responsible for doing something, or have the chance to accomplish something....you either neglect to do your part. Kind of like catching a fly ball in a game that will prevent a game winning run...and you drop the ball. The run scores, and your chance to be the hero of the game is gone. It can be applied to anything you are involved in. Say there is a job at work. You are supposed to have a certain task done for the whole project to be completed. You don't do your part, so the whole project and the work of others involved is compromised....or delayed. If you "drop the ball", something you were supposed to do...wasn't done either on time or correctly. Hope this helps......Judy

If you were late for a meeting, then you dropped the ball
If you forgot to send an e-mail then you dropped the ball
If you stopped doing your project then you dropped the ball
If you taste ham and wheat, and a little cheese and a dab of vinaigrette, then you're probably eating a tasty sandwich, but this doesn't determine whether or not you've truly dropped the ball.
I think the phrase comes from sports
So businesspeople don't feel like dorks
By spouting terms that sound like fun
Instead of just "I failed to get that done"
