Ok, at the risk of sounding completely inept....what do the heads look like, and just rub them down with the q-tip and alcohol? Thanks all.

Because the head (only 1 unless it's a dual deck) only spins when a tape is inserted, hand cleaning is not recommended ( also a b**** to do.). Buy a new head cleaner tape. They're not that expensive.

I used to take long wooden q-tips and dip them in rubbing alcohol and use them to clean the heads in my vcr. (make sure to unplug it first)

take the bottom screws out and spray Windex on the heads make sure to dry the heads real well

You can try using a damp cloth, which I hope is clean...
