I have noticed a trend where people complain that police have too much power and say they want police to have less power, until they need the police and then complain that they don't have enough power

Because the people are dumbasses. They have no idea what they want. I think most of the people on here that have a problem with the police are the very ones that cause the problems. I also think the ones that write those stupid questions are either high or stupid...you pick. Until they walk a day in a police officers shoes they will never..and i do mean never...understand what they go thru.

When you say "people", are you sure the complain come from same individuals? Maybe some complain about excessive police power and others complain about cops not doing enough. It's a complex issue. In some areas, cops do need more power to do their job. In others, they should have less. I'm sure people have a hard time agreeing with each other which areas.....

The Supreme Court ruled in the 1970's that the police are under no obligation to protect you.

Come to think of it, have you ever heard of an instance where an officer actually saved someone BEFORE they were hurt? (actually stopped a crime in progress?) The reason that you don't hear about it is because it RARELY occurs. Said to say that most cops are merely traffic officers or admins. What you see on COPS is the 5% factor. The only 95% is just secretarial work. Why has this occurred? In the past, cops were hired because of their brawn and ability to protect citizens from being hurt. Now they are hired to investigate crimes that have already occurred. If I have already had my butt kicked, then I no longer need the cops to help me.

My problem is that the police do not think the laws they are supposed to uphold apply to them or their families. If a cop or a member of a cop's family causes an accident while driving drunk, it always seems that the accident report gets "lost", the breathalyzer "fails" and witnesses seem to "forget" what happened. (Who wants to testify against a cop when they have to drive in that town?) I have worked with people who flash the fact that family members of theirs are cops, and threaten others with harassment if they don't get whatever they want (like switching days off even when plans have been made by the person that put in for the day off first). I had an ex-boyfriend who was harassing me, and his cop uncle was advising him on just how far her could go without getting arrested for it. A friend of mine was harassed relentlessly (constantly pulled over, police at his job asking his boss questions, making it seem like he was a suspect in several crimes) because he broke up with a girl whose brother was a cop.

So, abuse of their power is what a lot of people have problems with, not that they have the power.

People who complain about police usually have a number of fairly specific personal complaints to make. The fact is that police are duty bound to do a job that requires special powers and if necessary should be able to call upon higher powers if needed. If the general public were all model citizens, then police would be able to park and eat pizza all night instead of attending incidents and crime scenes.

people complain about police because they watch movies and TV shows that portray police as horrible people and find it easy to complain about it from watching those shows. what else would they complain about if they didn't complain about police.

they cry because they don't want their "rights" violated but then they are upset because the cops can't help because of the cry for "rights"...

And how exactly did you "notice" this so-called trend? What evidence or data do you have to support it?
