I agree with your idea of keeping him inside - it's much safer indoors. One of my cats was an outdoor cat before I adopted her. She would sit at the door at night and meow to go out...she had also learnt to hit the spring doorstopper to make a noise!

Anyway, I got her a leash and harness and wen't out with her. She decided where we went, I just followed. Eventually she stopped wanting to go outside.

If you have a backyard with a clothesline, you can attach the leash to it, but never leave him unattended if you do that. A friend of mine does this when she's working in the garden or just lying in the sun. The cat loves it, and gets outdoor time without the unsafe aspects.

Also, make sure he has plenty of toys to play with and access to windows where he can watch birds and squirrels. He'll eventually settle down.

Please don't take dee30's advice and put your cat on a rope!! And in the basement!! OMG. Cats are roaming creatures...it's part of being a cat. Even indoor cats roam around the house. To limit the cat to 20 feet of walking space, to me, is not right. I adapt to my animals...I don't make them adapt to me. Cats will fight, and some will lose. He should learn which cats to stay away from. My 2 cats are outdoors days/in at night. I think it's just something he will have to learn on his own...how to stand his ground. If he's used to going outside, I doubt that he will be very happy staying cooped up inside. Try letting him out during the day, but make sure he's in at night. A lot of fights happen at night. And maybe it's not just cats fighting with him at night. It could be any animal...raccoons, skunks, etc...that are messing with him.

Cats take to litter boxes very easily just put Him in the box and scratch his paws in it a few times and if you really want him to stay indoors have him fixed that will calm him down.

All you havre to do is put up a litter box and he will use it. Much easier to housetrain a cat than a dog. Just have to keep him from getting out.

Give him a play area with a scratching pole and some balls of wool. That way he will be entertained and want to stay indoors. Put him in your laundry at night to protect him from fights outside..aswell as protecting birds he may go and kill that are native to the area. :)
