I work with troubled tens and I know of few police officers that will put the fear of God in a teen. They just aren't allowed to do that. Unfortunately, they are usually too nice to the kids.
Make sure the next time your child steals that the person presses charges. That's important. If it happens again after that your child will be taken to a juvenile detention center...........take a deep breath............it's ok. At that time he/she will be taken into a room, searched, shown a movie of what will happen in the facility, and then...................put in a small room.( a few hours) Then you go and pick up the child. Scares them a lot and they don't usually stray again. Call your local juvenile detention center and ask them about it . Tell them your problem, that your child is a good kid, just making bad decisions at the time. They will direct you as to what to do.

My oldest daughter was caught stealing things from the tie she was 4 y/o. Over the years we went to counsilors and made little progress. When she was around 14 she was finally diagnosed ADHD. They said it was hard to detect and the primary thing that brought them to the diagnosis was her lack of impulse control and this is a characteristic of ADHD. She is now 27, married has her own 3 y/o daughter and lives a wonderfully normal life. From a Christian perspecitve, one of the fruits of the spirit is patience. Not easy but it is a fruit since patience pays off in the end. God Bless

find out what other problems they have, usually children do things like this because they lack attention or have some other social issue.
Perhaps they are trying to keep up with their peers, there are so many things that it could be.
It wouldnt hurt to have a local policman talk to them and let them know of the repercussions involved if they are caught.

It's called kleptomania (compulsive stealing, a sickness of the mind). See a psychiatrist.

When he steals next time, don't bawl him out. Simply tell him, "You didn't know better. We are going back to the store and you are going to return the thing to the nice lady. Tell her you took it, but that you want to return it, Tell her you are sorry you took it, but you want her to have it back.

Have a talk with your local police - they can put the fear of God into teenagers and on occassion, if you can get a good cop, get your kid locked up for a few hours - it does them the world of good.
