I'm seeing a lot of resistance to this idea through a yahoo search and it didn't occur to me until then that the idea of a white woman having dreads would be offensive to some folks. I'd still like to have them, though, b/c they're easy to care for as I understand it, and they look beautiful. On that note, please do not respond w/opinions on whether or not a white gal should have dreads: helpful information on how I might grow them only, please. Thanks!

K, am gettting some opinions here and I really don't want or need them. I appreciate the sentiments on both sides but I'm just looking for instructions: thanks!

make sure you go and get them done by someone who is black. that being said, it think it's a wonderful idea that you want dredlocks. i know you said no opinions, but what they hey? i'm black. i think dreds are lovely and if my head wasn't so big, i'd get them. hair is not a "black" or "white' thing. that's ignorant. unless i'm mistaken, whoever is going to do them (unless you want to do them yourself) is going to use some sort of hair pommade and might use egg whites. the texture of white hair is different from black hair (black hair has a flat cuticle, which makes it easier for it to hold different styles and white hair has a round cuticle, which makes it more prone to unravelling from different styles) so make sure that you ask whoever is doing your hair if they have expereince with white hair.
just make sure it's something you want. dreds are permenant. that's why they're called "locks" the hair locks up and in uncombable. you'll have to cut all of your hair off if you decide to get rid of them.

I also would like to note that I have dreads and I work as an office coordinator for a in home nursing agency. I don't think it makes a difference as long as you do a good job and are of value to an employee

It is to bad that people are so buttheaded these days.Dreads being offensive is rediculous.Be who you want to be.Anyways I've heard from a white man who's had dreads before, pick a spot to dread hold it taut and then brush it up like teasing.Roll in your palms and repeat.Stay away from any conditioners.Wash sparingly, repeat until you get what you want.Be patient!

start washing your hair with a bar of soap instead of shampoo this will dry your hair out which is the purpose of dreads.... Just start taking your hair and rubbing it in sections between your hands like you are rolling dough or something till its like "ratty" then add some wax or something to it. Wash only with soap

just go to this website http://www.dreadheadhq.com it should answer all your questions about dreads. i also wanted to add that if you don't want them your not going to have to cut all your hair off, you just have to take one dread at a time put conditioner and comb it out from tip to root. takes a while but if you want to keep your hair you do what you gotta do

um... i think you may want to reconcider... its not a very cute look anymore. im not saying because of the color of your skin ... im saying ... not a very good move period. the whole concept seems a little dirty to me and that look has been long gone.
but if you insist on doing it dont wash or comb... keep in the dread like form.... and enjoy...

Just remember that if you do it and get sick of the dreads, you will have to cut all your hair off to get rid of them.
