Because if they didn't they would either explode or fly around the room really really fast.

Usually it is because you have parasites. There are herbal cleanses to rid yourself of them. It might be that you have taken a lot of medications such as antibiotics. You need to replace the good flora (good bacteria) that the meds have killed off. This is needed to fight off infections and properly digest your foods - which prevents gas. One of the best sources is Probiotic Advantage by Dr. David Williams. I take this tiny pill everyday and now can eat whatever I like, it has helped with gas problems and proper digestion. I do not have acid reflux any more either. Some people have gas because they have irritable bowel syndrome or are sensitive to certain foods. If apples, onions or fish bother you, you may need to have your gall bladder checked out. I would suggest going to an herbalist or Nautropathic doctor. They can help you with all of these concerns.

When digesting food, the enzymes and bacteria that break down your food tend to create a little gas as a byproduct. That gas collects together and either travels out through your mouth "burps" or out through your anus as flatulence...."farts" in laymens terms.

I believe that as the bacteria feed off the stuff in your colon they release gas. And I guess as the gas builds up, pressure builds up in that region, causing your muscles to contract and push out the gas to reduce the pressure....or something like that....

Watch Nickalodeon for a couple hours, and you'll soon find out.... geesh, what an annoying short!
But, really, foods you eat cause gas as they digest, and that is nature's way of getting rid of it.

It has something to do with the way the lower intestine works in assimilating the foods we digest.
I like this answer better: If they don't, they will explode!

gases are released from the mechanical digestion and chemical absorption.....then the gas is pushed through the intestines by peristalsis and out the anus...
