Once I was a Telecom Engr for one three letter company, which then morphed into something reminiscent of horizon.

Advice: keep your nose clean.

Keep a low profile and DO YOUR JOB with minimal kvetching.

Pretend you don't see what would put you into trouble once spoken carelessly.

Be polite with superiors and use few, but well-thought words.

With co-workers REMEMBER never to open up too much or say anything which could be deemed critical about anyone. On your level, above you, or below. If you feel like venting, go outside and smoke, or better yet, "CRY TO GOD" about it in your spirit.

Gossip and office politics can be the kiss of death.

Also, it's better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you could be "a fool" or anything derogatory, than opening it and removing all doubt.

Over time, you'll be appreciated and rewarded for your integrity.

I've seen it over and over in a work life spanning from 1952 to 1999.

Finito.

Yes do what you love is important. However, the best wisdom i recieve about my job was this.......

"Don't give them a leg to stand on." meaning, do your job, don't gossip, be professional and don't give them a reason to try and bring you down. Very important when working in a large company or agency.

I am a state employee and the state dept that i work in there is a lot of backstabbing at all levels........so keep your nose clean and do the best that you can at your job.
