Virginia is not that great of a state, in my opinion, but it is great to visit. Check out Colonial Williamsburg, with nearby Busch Gardens and Water Country USA. In the fall be sure to check out the views from Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, and year-round there's Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, home to Virginia's tallest mountain. I've been to the transportation museum in Roanoke where I learned about the history of the CSX railroad. There's also plenty of Civil War trails if you're into that sort of thing, including the Appomattox Court House where Lee surrendered. In Richmond there's a small Poe museum. While Poe lived in Baltimore, he was born in Richmond. Oh, and there's Woodrow Wilson's birthplace in Staunton. Monticello (Jefferson's estate) in Charlottesville, and Mount Vernon (Washington's estate) near Washington, DC. Take the George Washington Parkway from the Beltway for some scenic views. There's also Great Falls, but the best view for that is on the Maryland side of the Potomac, where you'll also find the C&O canal, which George Washington surveyed and built. Which brings us back to CSX railroad, which was originally the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad, "George Washington's railway," which I learned about in Roanoke's transportation museum.

"Great" in what way??? Politically, it's awful; transportation is even worse (it has the worst traffic jams in the area). Touristically, it's great: You should see: Williamsburg, Monticello, The Pioneer Farm Museum (near Monticello), Mount Vernon, Gunston Hall (near Mt. Vernon but more impressive), Norfolk Navy Yard, Virginia Beach, Luray Caverns, Skyline Drive (Shenandoah National Park), the Civil War battlefields (Manassas, Fredericksburg, The Wilderness), Arlington National Cemetery, Old Town Alexandria. (How's that?)

It depends on what part your visiting. For the Williamsburg area you have Historic Williamsburg and Jamestowne as well as Bushe Gardens. If your talking about Northern Virginia then Washington DC is close as well as Mt. Vernon, Old Town Alexandria, and The Air and Space Museum.
