I have a 2 and a half year old son. He is having trouble with spoon feeding himself. He does very well with getting the spoon to his mouth and getting the food in, it's the scooping the food onto the spoon he's having trouble with.(he gets very agitated when he cant do it) Any advice or different kinds of spoons he may do better with? Ive tried giving him a fork but it didnt work so well...any ideas??

Like everyone else said, this is very common at his age as he's perfecting his coordination. But to ease his frustration, you might try giving him food that is easier to scoop up. For example, you might try making mashed potatoes, then cutting up little pieces of chicken and vegetables and stirring them into the potatoes for a complete mean. He'll be able to stick the spoon in and the food will stick, allowing him to successfully pick it up and get it into his mouth. Oatmeal also works well. As does thick yogurt. When my daughter was really little, I used to have a little dish of a thick plain yogurt next to her at meals. I'd coat the bottom of the spoon with a little yogurt, then let her stick the spoon into the food - rice and meat or whatever - and the food would stick. The yogurt was like a tasty glue.

Good luck!

He is very young and still learning coordination. This is only the beginning of the many frustrations he will experience as he grows, learns, and develop his skills. Just give him a spoon he likes (those coated spoons or a plastic spoon may help) and let him practice on food that scoops very well--cooked oatmeal maybe? Do not be too quick to "bail him out" or he will not learn to deal with frustration, but tell him he is doing better every time. Good luck!

practise makes perfect, get him some scoops to play with in the sandpit, that's great practise play for hand -co-ordination, also water scoops for him to play with in the bath , and something amusing he can pour it into , on eBay theres the baby Einstein range of toys that have great bath and sand toys,he'll be shovelling food into his mouth like an expert in no time..lol

don't worry
i have two kids of my own and many nephews and nieces. this is a very common thing and he will get better with time. just work with him and applaud his efforts and he will be less frustrated and it will become more of a game and therefore be more fun. the more fun it becomes the more he will practice and the faster he will learn..... good luck
