good public transportation close to major grocery. Is that too much to ask? Getting bogus responses.

You can find apartments in SE Portland that are connected via many bus routes for $600/month or less. Craigslist is a good way to go, as the first person to answer recommended. However, it's unlikely to find more than a 1 bed/1 bath apartment in this price range. I know someone who recently vacated an 800 sf 1bed/1bath unit in SE Portland near public transportation. It's no longer available, but was only $530/month.

I definitely agree that you do not want to be in NW Portland. The lower the numbered street, the better. SE is best in my opinion.

Look closely at the listings in those links offered by the other posters... I doubt you'll find anything with more than one standard bathroom, and sometimes the only bathroom may be shared with others. $600 won't get much more than a studio apartment or rented room here, unfortunately... unless you qualify for Section 8 housing, and then you'd have a wait because you'd be on a list.

However, you can still get more reasonable housing in nearby (connected) towns like Gresham, Beaverton, Clackamas City. They are part of the mass transit system, so you can get just about anywhere you need to go by bus or MAX train.

Check out North Portland. There are many apartments there right on the MAX line, and close to major grocery stores like Fred Meyer and New Seasons. Check out http://portland.craigslist.com/cgi-bin/search?areaID=9&subAreaID=0&query=North+Portland&catAbbreviation=apa&minAsk=min&maxAsk=600&bedrooms=

Serious answer:

http://portland.craigslist.org/cgi-bin/search?areaID=9&subAreaID=0&query=&catAbbreviation=apa&minAsk=min&maxAsk=600&bedrooms=

I narrowed your search to apartments $600 (max) in Portland.

If that link doesn't work, try going to http://portland.craigslist.org & you'll find apartments for rent, roommates, etc.

Good luck!
