I hear a lot about people feeling depressed because they can't find a purpose in life. I think this is a result of an overly individualistic and materialistic society. If you find inner peace, happiness with the simplistic and stop focusing on what you don't have then you will become a happy person.

Why do some people get sad that they arn't extraordinary? Isn't it better to lead a good, simple life?

You're absolutely right!

People should just love their lives and try not to want so much. That's the problem with our society. We WANT. A lot of us can't be happy with what we have like we should.

I once spent three weeks in a third world country to see what it would be like. I brought a lot of my usual luxuries with me just in case I couldn't handle it, but I ended up not using any of them at all. I just relaxed and tried to enjoy the simple life. It was great. When I got back to the United States, I just went back to my usual self, BUT I did learn to love my life more. I don't know what it was, but I feel like a better person now and I dont want as much as I used to. It's pretty great and I'm trying to keep it this way. =)

I think it's normal for people to want to make a difference of some kind. We all do, but we may not appreciate what we achieve to the extent we should.

I would suggest the way to combat this feeling is to be generous with complements, to thank people, to offer praise, to offer encouragement whenever and wherever possible.

I don't know if I'm extraordinary or not. And, I don't really care if I am or not. I try to do the best I can with what I've been given to work with. I'm 65 years old, semi-retired, doing a job I enjoy, and can look at kids who love and appreciate me.

I wish I was rich but I probably never will be. I have loved and have been loved. I'm a Christian, my choice, thank you, and feel that gives me a purpose.

I do think--in the main--I am happy, but I do suffer frustrations at times and think I am absolutely normal in doing so.

I think you are very correct in your approach, but perhaps you don't truly appreciate the extent to which most people are ambitious and are denied the appreciation and encouragement we all need.

You asked a very good question. One all of us should think about and--thinking about it--learn from.

Humans are, by nature, spiritual beings. We need to find a purpose. We like to believe in God. Simple existence is not enough for us.
But you are right. Our society is so removed from the simple pleasures of everyday life that we do not enjoy what we have. Our mind is preoccupied with the future and obsessed with the past. We give ourselves impossible materialistic goals, and are depressed when we don't reach what we think society expects of us.

There is something inside of people that is incredible and it wants to be known. That is why people wonder where they came from and why they are here when they are just going to die. They wonder where will they be after they die.
