I can tell u from my experience...When I lay down...if I lay flat on the bed with only the pillow behind my head...my lungs start to hurt...my throat gets dry...I can feel fluid building up in my lungs and then it gets pretty hard to breathe....then I have to sit up and cough...SO what I do now is put 2 pillow behind my head so that my waist up is up at a 45 degree angle...my back is not totally flat ...its parallel and the fluid cannot build up and make me cough...you need anti-bio tics for that cough....I know exactly what ur going thru

One reason is you are laying down and the congestion is settling into your chest. Another reason is pretty simple: your tired after being sick all day and it aggravates your symptoms. Ever notice how you usually feel better in the morning? It's because you are rested.

Hope you feel better soon!

If the cough starts when you are lying down, then I suspect it is sinus drainage stimulating your cough reflex.Try a antihistamine.

That happens 1.) because you've been awake all day and are growing tired and 2.) when you lay down it becomes much harder on your lungs.
