After many minor maintanence repairs, my jetta finally decided to take the big fall. It has been "lagging" in power when I step on the gas, usually in 2nd gear, but then it picks up. But a few days ago the lag became longer, then I heard a pop/bang from under the car, and then the engine became completely unresponsive to the gas petal. Eventually the engine died and I coasted to the curb. I noticed a sulfur smell when the car stopped.

A few extra things:
-When I start it the engine turns over but doesn't catch.
-When the "lagging" occured the RPM's didn't jump, they matched the speed I was going.
-There has always been a rattling sound, in any gear, around 3000rpm's.

As I said this may be the big repair, have any ideas on what the problem could be? And how much am I getting myself into?

Thanks.

Thanks for all the advise, except for that one about the rubber band.
All my belts were changed within the last 40k miles. The mechanic gave the car a tune-up and now it runs better than before. I'll get on it later tonight and see if the lagging is still an issue.
The rattling noise is still apparent, but I'm happy if it runs. Thanks again.

You may have a transmisson problem, but your problem right now is that the drive belt is either broken,or the teeth have stripedin the engine. The 2.0 uses a drive belt. Not a chain.Either way you will have to replace the belt, could also be that the tensioner will have to be replaced also.Depending on the engine speed when the belt failed, you could have bent valves, and need the head reworked or replaced.I will be happy to advise you further, but will need more info.Contact me at your leisure.vwjcook@yahoo.com

The cost to replace the transmission is going to be around $1700.00 unless you find one in a wrecking yard. However, after reviewing all your facts listed here,I have determined that your problem may not be your transmission. The transmission is not going to keep the engine from cranking in most cases and it is not going to make your gas pedal unresponssive.Your problem sonds like a timming belt issue or you could have blown a head gasket. Both of these problems can mean major repairs but should cost under $500.00.As for as the sulfur smell,I beleive you are smelling something else such as burned oil or possibly overheated antifreeze or water from the radiator. Both of these problems can cause your car to have the symptoms discribed before the car actually quits on ya.I recommend taking it to a professional and having them to check it out.based on their findings, then you can decide if it is worth repairing it or if you want to find parts in a wrecking yard or buy new parts.I have bought a bunch of reliable parts on ebay but you have to be careful on what you buy or who you buy from on ebay.

Good luck with your car.

The cost now a days for a giant rubber band usually goes for $1.380 per foot and these are only made in Ontario, Canada.
So get out there and make it "Snappy"...

timing chain... the noise was your warning....now, get ready to spend 1500-2000 dollars when you could have tightened the adjuster yourself if you would've spent 11 dollars for a hanes service manual available at autozone. It would have told you what to do to fix a minor adjustment before you ruin your engine.

There are transmission repair facilities, such as AAMCO that can give you a price quote. Perhaps you should contact them, not a Q&A forum.
