The person decides to change their gender to match their "brain sex". A person's genetalia has nothing to do with their gender IDENTITY. You can look one way and totally feel another way. And to be honest with you, many transgendered and transsexual people decide to make the transition because it's simply easier to live their life that way. It comes from a psychological diagnosis of GID or Gender Identity Disorder or Gender Dysphoria. It's still a medical "mental illness" although I don' t think there's anything abnormal about it. All babies start off as female in the womb, and it's that extra kick of testosterone and a Y chromosome that makes us different as male and female. Do you think that things ALWAYS go perfectly according to plan? I don't. Sometimes wires get crossed, things get misplaced and you end up with truly unique, wonderful, diverse people like transsexuals, transgendered people and intersexed people. And it's actually been studied that transsexuals are two standard deviations above the mean on intellectual abilities than straight people and one standard deviation above the mean than homosexuals. So, most are not "mentally ill" or "insane" in my opinion. I believe it takes a LOT of self introspection and self analysis to come to the decision to transition.
You really can truly learn a lot about society and how to live your own life for yourself from a transsexual person. They have a tremendous amount of knowledge and considering they have had a unique opportunity to see the world from two different views, they have a first hand account of just how differently you are treated by society depending on what people ASSUME is between your legs. You can learn a lot from a transsexual, and the ones that I have had the pleasure of meeting have all been WONDERFUL people.

My understanding is that they don't want to change their gender, but they feel they were born into the wrong physical gender to begin with.

In other words, even though someone may be anatomically male, s/he may feel more feminine than masculine. S/he may feel out of place, or as a kind of "misfit."

Some folks mistakenly assume that gender identity has to do with sexual orientation. It doesn't. As an example, look at Pat Califia, who was born a "lesbian" but found his true identity as a homosexual male. Conversely, there are men who become women and self-identify as "lesbian."

I'm quite content with my feminine gender & can't say I really understand trannies 100%, but I try my best to understand where they're coming from.

psychologically, it's a chemical imbalance in the brain.

To me, they just feel more comfortable that way. no one wants to feel uncomfortable in their own skin.
