To provoke someone is to set them off. This can be deliberate or unintentional.

Examples:

"I got really angry when she made that joke about my mother. Although she didn't know that my mom had died, her insensitive comment really provoked me."

or

"I want that guy to hit me so I can sue him. I am going to go over there and provoke him."

Another definition of provoke , is to cause to think.

The speaker said many things, provoking me to study futher on the subject.

MY point is that provoke does not always have to have anger involved, just that it causes you to act in some fashion or manner either physically or mentally , or both.

I am provoked by someone who makes fun of me, I want to harm them becasue of it, they are causing me to feel irratibility towards them. Provoking someone is when you do things to get a rise out of them or cause to do something in return(not in a good way)

To provoke is to cause something to happen, to nag or anger or irritate until something unforseen happens... I was provoked into an arguement even though at first I wasn't angry.
