cuz they have gas...
some people can't control how it comes out. some of us can feel it coming on and excuse ourselves to the restroom (holding it causes severe colon problems down the road). some older folks loose this ability either due to age or medicines.
i had a huge problem with this when i was pg. ohmigod. i've never been so embarassed in my life! it was horrible...everyone made fun of me, but i really couldn't help it!!

While you're eating and drinking you're also swallowing air which become traped in your intestines. Its pushed along by feces and is eventually expelled. Hope that helps.

Hmmm. Idunno...HOWEVER!!! I DO KNOW WHY WE BURP AFTER DRINKING SODA!!! the bubbles go up, and it makes you burp, so if they went down, you would fart after a big gulp. HAHAAHA
