Masochists are people who hurt themselves.
Are you looking for religious sects? In New Mexico (I'm not sure about anywhere else) there is a sect of Christians or Catholics who call themselves the Penitentes.
These people go through religious acts of cleansing. They believe that by causing themselves bodily pain (sometimes even drawing their own blood) they wash away their sins. They believe it brings them closer to their Maker, and helps them understand Jesus' pain.

i did i watch myself goin apart & i was makin my self diein inside
cuz i though that will work but aaaaaouch
none of all of this worked so i relized 2 live the day only not thinkin of yesterday & not lookin for 2morrow just live your day that'll let your life go easier

This is one facit of a mental illness. Some do it to gett attenion and some do it to feel something and some are being told to do it by their sick minds. There are some who do it because they hate themselves for something they did or something that was done to them.

not me most of the time. Although at work yesterday i decided i had more will power than pain had over me. So i stuck a nail through my finger......... i kind of regret it now
