I'm currently giving my 12 month old daughter homogenized milk but am thinking about switching her to partly skimmed 2% because that's what the rest of the family drinks. Is that a bad idea?

actually yes it is a bad idea

I am a nutritionist, it is harmful to give any child under five reduced fat products (including 2% milk) because it can cause slow brain development

who ever it was that said children do not need milk is also correct there is no reason to ever give a child milk that isnt from a human source

Well, partly skimmed means that it is like less fat which is good for a child, mainly because it gets the same nutrients as regular milk.

Homogenized means that it was cooked before bottling. All milk is suppose to be homogenized to kill the bacteria in the milk. You must remember, milk that you buy in the store is not exactly fresh from the cow. Matter of fact, it was sitting in some milk silo prior to being bottled.

If your part of WIC, (women infants and children) you should get enfamil. Enfamil is a good milk substitute which packs more nutrients then regular milk.

Time have changed since you were a child, and that is by far the way it is, if you are not part of WIC, may I suggest trying to get into it because it will help relieve the financial stresses of having a child. I hope that this helps you.

You should probably ask your pediatrician. Skimmed milk is better because it has less homogenized milk has more fat and at least my pediatrician felt it was best for my daughter to be on 2% because she kept gaining too much weight. If you all are drinking 2% then she will learn to love it too...I don't know if she has any health issues and again would recommend you ask her doctor first.

all milk is homogenized. meaning it won't separate into layers of skim and curds. if you're giving whole milk and want to switch to 2% that is ok. they don't necessarily need the fat content, just the milk protein. though babies are not the ones to worry about fat just yet.

its a question that doctors have been trying to figure out lately. the child needs the milk for string bones and teeth. the difference from the two is 2 percent has less fat in it. but a child needs fat in natural foods to grow healthy. regular milk has the benefit of the fat your child needs as 2 percent has less fat. will the child grow obese from that? thats what they are arguing over now in the studies. at what age do you start giving healthier foods. babies have baby fat and grow out of it. what you let them have as they get older will determine if then become chunky. everyone i know today and when i was growing up drank regular milk. as we get in our teens and older if there is a weight problem, then go to a less fatter milk.

it's definitely not a bad idea. after a year, children do not have to drink whole milk. there's just as much calcium in Skim as there is in Whole. she doesn't need all of that extra fat that's in Whole.

i don't want to be rude but the kid needs the tit or whole milk with all the good stuff in it. kids at that age need all they can get. if you cut off their fat supply. well that is alot of their energy because they burn it off alot faster and grow like champs.
