As a parent who has had 3 teenage girls and have ALWAYS been involved with my kids...I disagree with the teenager above...it depends on the activity. My kids tell me if I am not spending enough time with them and ask me to "tag along" with them and their friends....the real trick is to be "Cool" doesn't mean don't be responsible just "loosen up" a bit. Get to know their friends and then you will get closer to them and be able to spend quality time with your teenager...it is a difficult time for them and very "hormonal" wish you luck.

Ask them what is something good for parents and children to do together. If that feels strange then why not suprise them with a blast from your past ( do something that you remember doing with your parents that made you feel good as a teenager.)

Bottom line: Teen is one of the last stages in the relationship of parent/child it's where they have came a long way from riding bikes, changing diapers and first words but still not far enough from us loving and admiring them for who they are to us.

Sometimes, the best thing to do is see what they want to do. And if you've never done it before, be open minded and try it. Just make sure that safe for you and your teenage kids.

It all depends on what your kids are into. Maybe do something that they like to do...If they like to play video games, then take them to an arcade. If you have daughters, then maybe take them to a spa for a girls day out or make-overs. If you have boys and they love cars, try taking them to a race or car show.

I'm thirteen -- I think it's great that you want to spend time with your kids. My mom probably wants to also! But I just really don't want to spend time with her, and would MUCH rather spend time with my friends.

Just to let you know, from a teens point of view.

What does he/she like to do? Try spending some time doin' what they like to do. I wish my parents woulda done more stuff with me that I enjoyed doin', they mostly done what my other two brothers and lil sister liked doin'. If they enjoy cars, take 'em to a car show or a nascar/local race. If they like baseball/football/soccer/others take them to a game.

All, depends on their interests. If they like baseball/softball take them to a ball field and play catch, pitch to them, etc. If they like card games teach them a new one. Try rummy, repeat rummy, skip-bo,UNO etc. If they like to ride bikes, ride with them. If they like to play video games take them to the mall, the arcades usually have games for two players (driving, etc.)
What ever they like to do just get involved with them. Your children will love the thought that you are doing something with them. Especially if it is something that they already like to do!!

Leah has it right. The others.............doesn't matter what their interests are the teens want to be with their friends. It's really hard to deal with teens growing up...I miss the times we had too.
I have learned to invite his friends along.....that seems to be the ticket. One friend is best.

Give them enough space, but be there when they need you, and make them feel that you see them as new adults and not old children. Eventually, they'll seek you.
