Ive been taking a prescription drug called xanax for about 2 1/2 years for a panic disorder. Ive gotten my panic disorder under control now but it seems almost impossible to stop taking the pills. Im scared of how ill feel if i dont take them anymore but they are starting to control my life. Im only 22 years old and i dont want to take them forever. How do i stop? I already talked to my doctor and she said that i just have to slowly stop taking them but it seems like the harder i try the more i fail. If anyone knows how i can stop taking them without going through rehab please help me.

Follow your doc's orders. Xanax cannot be stopped abruptly. You might want to ask your doctor if you can be prescribed something else for your anxiety that is not a controlled substance like Paxil to deal with the initial panic you'll suffer.

I know for people with depression or any other psychiatric disorders like anxiety disorder or panic disorder, there are evidence that suggests frequent exercise brings on natural endorphin, which is a powerful antidepressant.. It really works... I am so addicted to endorphin now, I cannot go a day without exercise. After exercise, I am much more patient, feel lot better about myself..

I'm no doctor but I suggest that, despite your fears, do as your doctor says. Slowly stop taking the pills. There could be withdrawal symptoms to it but if your panic disorder comes back, either quickly go see your doctor or get back on the pills again and then go tell your doctor that you tried.

Cut the tablets in half if your health professional says you can do this. Then cut the pills into quarters. Then cut the pills into eighths.

When you get a smaller amount into your system you may just want to stop.

You really need to speak with your doctor and get professional medical advise for this one. Trying to quit on your own after taking them for so long could be dangerous for you!
