hands down winner is the honda fit. I have read extensive reviews of both cars. Let me give you some insight from those reviews: Money Magazine (July 2006)
Yaris: "unashamedly thrify, maybe too thrifty.
cabin surfaces range from harsh gray plastic to harsher, darker gray plastic. Getting up to crusing speed can be a bit of a nail biter. You wind up flooring the Yaris' accelerator to merge onto the highway".
Fit: "A taller wedge shape gives it porportions that are almost mini-van like. The rear seats fold flat into the floor opening up a tremendous amount of room. Driving the Fit is equally eye-opening. The throttle reponds instantly to the gas pedal, and the suspension keeps the car firmly planted through corners. From behind the wheel you notice how well put together the Fit's cabin is"
I have not test driven the Yaris. But I have driven the Scion Xa which has the same 1.5 liter engine. Its lack of pep is what prevents me from buying the Scion Xa.
Other reviewers
have mentioned that the Fit has a sweet spot in the transmission where the car really takes off. To me the choice is a no brainer.
The Yaris is toyota, but so was the Echo. Toyota does make
mistakes.
ps.. be sure to check out the 2007 Aveo. It is a much more substantial car than the 2006 Aveo. They will be available sometime later this summer.

I dont know who said hondas ride smoother but the is incorrect. toyotas run smoother. Both the fit and yaris are good cars. I'd be careful on getting one because they are still new. Toyota and honda usually dont have problems but as i said its a new car. if you are interested in these cars you should also check out the civic. it is a little pricer but it has more room in it and still gets over forty mpg. It was car of the year.
If i were picking between the fit and yaris i would take the car which had the highest safety ratings.

Both have pretty good reliability. The Yaris has better mileage, but the Fit is a lot more fun to drive and has an extremely versatile interior. Choose based on what you value most.

Both Toyota and Honda (and Nissan) are very good and dependable cars. But Ive owned all and I prefer Honda. The ride is a little bit smoother, the car styles are better, and they will last longer too!

I have a Yaris and I love it. It's a really nice car. In my opinion the Yaris is better because it was the most popular sub-compact car in Japan and Europe (bc of fuel efficiency) way before they released the car here in the states. And it's so cute! Spacious too.

Both Toyota and Honda are very good and dependable vehicle brands. I'd choose Honda over Toyota for the fact that they have a higher resale value if you'd ever want to get rid of it.

Yaris looks better. both are probably equally good, quality wise. Check out Consumer Reports. Have you thought of Toyota's Scion?

The Camry SE looks...almost sporty. As far as Toyotas go, I like the Camry SE.
