I'd use a flash memory drive to move documents from one place to another. If your documents are not large, CD is the best way to go because they're cheap and most computers can read them.

Norm has already give you how much each can hold. It's just a matter of determining which one delievers the best cost/benefit ratio for your situation.

A CD holds about 700 Megs

A DVD holds 4.7 Gig

A dual layer DVD holds 9.4 Gig

You can put documents on any of them. If 700 meg is enough capacity go for the CD. They are cheap at less then 20 cents each on sale.

Next the DVD at about 25 to 30 cents each.

The dual layer is still expensive at about $3 each.

It really depends on how much space you need.

you can use CDs on any burner, you can only use the others on their specific kind of drive.

the DVD can hold usually 4.7 GB about 8 CDs of 700 MB, but a DVD DL can hold about 9.5 GB (double as a single layer DVD)

if you are planing to just store data, you will be using CDs mostly even if you bought a DVD burner, nowadays you can find DVD+/- DL for under $100, those can handle the three kids of media.
the reason to stick with CDs is because if it's only to store data, the cd's are less expensive, and will keep it more organized.

but if what you are planing is to "back-up" your movie library, you will be burning the movies on DVD-R, but you will have to find the right software (not sold in regular stores, because it means illegal movie piracy)

last time I checked the blank DVD-DL were EXPENSIVE, not even worth the trouble. ($10 ea) but that was last year, maybe now there are some cheap ones.
