You should not be able to visibly see a cat breathing unless you're specifically looking for him to breathing. Distress breathing can be a sign of a potentially dangerous problem. My cat who is not a Persian that developed exaggerated breathing ended up having cardiomyopathy which is fluid build up around the heart. That presses on the lungs. Call the vet and tell him that he's not acting like himself and that his breathing seems labored. I'm sure he'll want to see him today. Good Luck
