Thyroid adenomas are usually benign. If the growth is not removed and is large enough, it will cause hyperthyroidism. The symptoms can often be treated successfully with anti-thyroid drugs. However, if the drugs do not work, surgery is recommended.

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism are:
nervousness
moodiness
weakness
tiredness
fast or irregular heart beat
hand tremors
respiratory difficulties
profuse perspiration
red, itchy skin
frequent diarrhea
hair loss
weight loss

Grossly Adenomas of thyroid are of two types. 1)Hyperfunctioing 2)Normofunctioning.Hyper functioning adenomas give all the features of Thyrotoxicosis diagnosed by their capacity to concentrate radioactive iodine.Normo functioning adenomas compress the thyroid tissue near them .
Surgery is needed in all adenomas.
Prognosis is decided by histopathological features..Surgery is always curative.

The other option is an Iodine coctail. It's a dose of radioactive iodine that is swallowed and taken up within minutes in the thryoid gland. It will shrink the tumor and make surgical intervention much easier and much more likely to "get it all". If it is left untreated, the person will die. It can be a very unpleasant death, so don't muck about - get it taken care of!
