My mom has a five year old spayed female that stays indoors. We have bought her tons of toys. Several packages of the little felt mice, balls with lights inside that blink when motion ids detected. sticks with cords with feathers on the end to drag around on the floor and many more things. The odd thing is I dropped a ball of tin foil i wadded up on the floor one time. She played with that for hours. I watched carefully to ensure she was not biting it because that would not be good for her, but she only bats ir around the room with her paws. The other thing is I put a paper grocery store sack on the floor and she runs in and out of it. When she is in there, you can scratch on the sides and it drive her nutz.
Weird--I buy all the good stuff and she hardly pays any attention to it, but drop some trash or junk that didn't cost a dime and its her favorite toy. Go figure.

My boys, aged 5, 8 and 17, really like a catnip stuffed sock. I take a regular tube sock and stuff it full of catnip (usually homegrown but you can find bulk nip at any good health food store). I make a knot at the top and throw it out onto the floor. They love it. They roll on it and carry it around. Then they all go and lay on their heads.

Tie between my elastic hair ties, the ring around the top of the milk jug, and sticky paper (the stuff you roll over your clothes to pick up lint). I think he gets a high off the adhesive or something!!

My 1 year old cat plays with half of a plastic Easter egg. It slides across the vinyl floor when he bats it. We play fetch. I throw it and he brings it to me, carrying it in his mouth. Sometimes he will bring it to me to let me know it's play time.

Me, dangling a string over his head. Crackers also likes a string with a ball on the end tied to a door knob.
