About 5 minutes ago, I asked "what if god is fake?" 90% of the answers were all about them not taking a chance on going to hell. About a month ago, I asked is the belief in god fear based. Not one believer admitted to it. Why? I asked the same questions to people in person and it's always the same contradictions. They bring up not taking a chance in going to hell when it comes to them being wrong but when I ask them is their belief in god fear based, they say "no"

Belief in God is not necessarily fear-based, although it can be; some denominations do focus on frightening end time scenarios that they believe are indicated by troubling events in the world, such as violence and disasters. So, some believers are motivated by a sense of fear. However, a new field of neurotheology studies how the human brain is hard-wired to seek God, or at least a higher power of some sort. Some speculate that this is really nothing more than an evolutionary safety feature that keeps humanity seeking goodness and higher consciousness; others say it is God's way of helping people search out God in individual spiritual processes.

I can honestly say that it is fear based and love based. Different meaning of fear though. A "God Fearing" man means that he respects and loves God. Personally, me being a Christian started out as a means of not going to Hell, but as I grew in my faith, I found Love in Christ. It's indescribable. The feeling of peace and love I feel when I pray or worship is so amazing that is could almost be described as a spiritual high. I became a Christian as 'fire insurance.' I remain a Christiann because of the love God shows me.

If Christians are all wrong, then who cares? Go on about your business until you die and then no problem. If the Bible is right, fear is a valid (& pretty strong) motivation to start learning about God.

Proverbs 1:7 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction."

Fear is a fine starting point (the word "beginning" also means foundation), but as we learn about God and what He did for us fear gives way to love for Him.

1 John 4:18 "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love."

They are brainwashed. They live their lives based on a book that's constantly contradicting itself so that's what they do as well when they respond to the simplest questions. I think Christianity is definitely based on fear. It makes sense though, fear is a great way to control people.

This guy has been conditioned so long to believe that he will go to hell if he doesn't accept Jesus that it's pretty much implanted in his mind. He compares the effects of Christianity to cancer:

It's now a psychological illness for him.

Because they will not go to hell we all create our own hell.
God wants us all to have our own thoughts and our beliefs.
That is why he gave us free will.
I would trust a person more if they did not believe in God and did not harm anyone.
Then I would with someone that believed in God and were a hypocrites and harmed many with lies and deceptions.
They are having their own life experience
So if they believe because of Fear what makes you think it is Fear ????
Maybe the Fear is really Guilt have you thought about that ??????
They may have a lot of guilt from past sins.
Hoping that if they believe in God that it may give them some brownie points.
And they won't go to Hell they will be excepted with open arms of Love.

Love & Blessings
Milly

Belief in God isn't fear based. However, belief in the "Christian" God "IS" fear based, as controlling people through fear was the purpose of inventing Christianity in the first place.

Reasons for the Persistence of Religion:

1) Fear of death.
2) Fear of the unknown (see 1 above).
3) Fear of social isolation (nobody wants to be the only one not in church on Sunday, or the only one who doesn't go along with the neighbors)

And last but never least:
4) Greed (anything that makes people so emotional is certain to be profitable for somebody)

But let's face it: Nobody wants to admit to any of these things.

To answer your second question "ARE CHRISTIANS REALLY THIS STUPID?" The answer of course is; yes, yes they are.
After all what else can you use to describe people who on the one hand say "turn the other cheek" but then say "an eye for an eye" when it suits them.
God is imaginary. Anyone who believes that this magic sky-pixie exists anywhere other than in the minds of the dupes who believe in it, are simply fooling themselves.

Oh and texasmom, thanks for proving his point. Threatening people with an imaginary hell is JUST what he's trying to demonstrate. Your cult is based on fear, nothing more.

my belief in God is this, I believe in him because I choose to have faith that he exists. however, people do have fear. you should fear hell and spending an eternity there, you should fear God to some level, fear God knowing that he is All Mighty and he is our creator. He alone knows your beginning and your end before even you do. Who wouldn't fear that? But at the same time, physical fear isn't there. God sent his son to die on the cross, because he loves us. Why fear God if he gave us such a wonderful gift?
