Don't do what the suburbanites and lame tourists do. Here's where you should really go. I lived right downtown for 4 years and 10 minutes away for another 5 years. I've been to everything and can tell you what the cool locals do.
During the weekend you're visiting, there are some major events happening. There is the Molson Grand Prix happening at Exhibition Place and through downtown streets if you want to watch some world class car racing. www.grandprixtoronto.com
For some casual art browsing of local artists, there's an outdoor art festival happening at Nathan Philips Square (City Hall) on Queen St. near Bay St.
For tunes, there's the Toronto Electronic Music Festival at Harbourfront Centre, which is by the lake. http://www.harbourfrontcentre.com/wr/festivals/bbc.php
For trendy, streetwear shopping, go to Queen St. West between University Ave. and Bathurst. For even more eclectic items, keep walking west.
For a fun university feel, go wander Bloor St at Bathurst. You'll find alternative video, cheap funky places to eat, lots of students. There's pubs and places to catch live music.
For uptown class, go to Yorkville (Bay St. and Bloor). It's wear the expensive stores are, but don't eat there. Most of the food is crap and overpriced.
For uber cool bars and great Italian food, go to "Little Italy". It's where the trendy, well-dressed hang out. It was voted coolest neighbourhood by Utne Reader magazine a few years ago.
If you want to try out some restaurants, there's a summer event called Summerlicious going on where you get to sample fixed price menus that are offered by some expensive restaurants. www.toronto.com/summerlicious
Other young, trendy places to eat can be found at King St. and Spadina. Don't eat at the places too close to University Ave. This is the theatre district, meaning "rip off the suburbanites and tourists with mediocre food". However, closer to King & Spadina is where all the new media companies are, so their employees fuel the restaurants.
For walking around, I would recommend the Distellery District. This is fairly new where they renovated a bunch of old warehouses and created a distinct creative space. There are galleries, some interesting shops, restaurants, and a fabulous chocolate shop. This place is a gem and often has outdoor performances going on. They filmed the first X-men movie there. http://www.thedistillerydistrict.com/
For nature walking, go to the Toronto Islands. You catch the ferry at Harbourfront and Yonge St. It's a few dollars and takes about 15 minutes. You'll feel like you've gone to visit the cottage and you can get amazing pictures of the Toronto skyline.
Ignore the "Where" magazine in the hotel. Pick up a "NOW" magazine, available free and published each Thursday. This is full of events and activities. It's like Toronto's version of NYC's "Time Out".
BTW, a good online resource is www.toronto.com
If you want to do the typical tourist things, watch a baseball game at Roger's Centre, catch a show in the Theatre District, go to the CN Tower, drive to Niagara Falls, and shop at the Eaton Centre.

Bearing in mind that Osama Bin Laden was killed by Americans in Pakistan and that English forces were not really involved and that there is an enormous Pakistani population in London then I think you would probably be safer there than in the U.S. As for budget it is one of the most expensive cities in the world so you would need a lot of money to enjoy it properly. A decent lunch or dinner in a restaurant costs about £50 - £80 ($80 - $130) for two people for example. Toronto would be cheaper. This is where I would choose to go anyway as I go to London everyday to work :(

July 9th is the world cup final. If you're into that sort of stuff, Toronto is one of the best cities for watching it, as no matter who wins there will be an ethnic group from that nation celebrating in the streets. In particular if Brazil wins, a good part of a major street (College St. at Ossington ) will be shut down and there will be many street bands celebrating because that is what Brazilians do!

Go to the CN Tower, the ROM, Ontario Science Museum, China Town and Centre Island. There is alot to do in Toronto. Have a great trip!

Do you mean Toronto, California? or Toronto, Canada. Because CA is not the abbreviation for Canada.
You'll find lots of things to do -- Toronto is a busy city, and there are many ethnic groups who seem to spend most of the summer having festivals and street fairs of one sort or another. Just check the newspaper for information on where they all are.
Enjoy your visit!
