I know about hens and roosters. But, what do we get when we buy them at the store? Are they primarily female or equal amounts of both?

Since you have seven wrong answers before me I thought you might like the right one. The 2-3 lbs birds you buy in the store are called pullets-females raised by companies for the food industry. These never lay eggs!!! They are typically called broilers. The 3-5 lbs birds are called Capon, these are the males from the same source. They are the same age but grow larger than females do to the fact that they're castrated. They are call fryers in the store. The 5-7 birds are the ex-egg layers and are called Roasters in the store! I hoped this clears things up. The stores sell on avg 4 females to 1 male because egg plants do away with male chicks before the cost them anything.

Usually female. Roosters are needed to help control the population of the hens. And only one rooster rules the roost. Males kill each other pretty quickly if not seperated. Therefore you are eating the hen, not the rooster.

Both. Some hens get a reprieve of sorts, being cooped in cages and debeaked while light is used to trick them into producing hormones (eggs) non-stop. They are killed after 3 - 4 months and sold as poultry.

An aside: did you ever wonder why eggshells are so thin? It is because the hen uses her own body to produce an eggshell. When the chick hatches, she eats the shell to get part of her calcium back. Laying hens are not given adequate if any calcium in their diets, and they don't get an opportunity to hatch a chick, it's done in incubators. So they only have a few months calcium in them before they are completely deleted.
