Which GPS device do you recommend?

I am trying to decide whether the portable sattellite navigation devices (GPS) for in car use, are worth buying and if so, which you think is the best model. Max cost no more than about £300 ($525).

These are expensive instruments and mistakes cannot be easily rectified. Would welcome your advice and comments.

Garmin is a very good company for GPS devices.
