They're not important in and of themselves, but they add joy to the service.

Important enough that one of the things King David did was to form a choir that sang on the Tabernacle (and later the Temple) giving praise to God 24/7. He wrote a large portion of the book of Psalms for the choir to sing.
Important enough the Jehosphat sent the choir into battle ahead of the army, and the praise and worship caused the enemies to defeat themselves.
Important enough that Paul told the early Christians to talk to each other in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.
But not so important that the church or the pastor could not succeed without them. They are just one of the many tools given to build and encourage the church.
If you are fortunately enough to be part of one, than always see it as a ministry to God for which you will be rewarded. And sing with joy and praise to him.

A church choir cements a relationship between the Church as a whole and the community with a good musical program.

Ephesians 5:19 - Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord...
Purdy dern important I'd say lol
The choir is a great way to worship God, making music is to a lot of people a way to express what's in the soul.

You're asking two questions, dove. The Pastor may be tone-deaf and the congregation conniousseurs!

If they are good.. then they can change the view of mass that others have. The enthusiastic ones really get me into it and make me happy to be singing with them.
