Each time I power up, a dialog box appears informing me that my copy of Windows XP is not genuine. How do they know? When I select the 'Get Genuine' option, I am offered a Windows XP installation pack for £92 (call it $150). Has anybody else had such a problem? Isn't the amount demanded by Microsoft a little excessive?

Microsoft is getting tough on people who use pirated software. If the XP doesn't pass the validation scan MS offers an electronic Product Key for $149 USD (XP Pro) or $99 (XP Home).

There are several legal merchants who sell the software for a lot less. Try www.edirectsoftware.com and they had XP Pro SP2 full install disks for about $100 USD.

If you purchase a full install CD you don't have to do a reinstall. You can do a repair. That let's you overwrite the existing XP, repair or replace any corrupted or missing files, register the new Product Key, and you don't lose any of your settings or other applications. You will have to visit the update site to reinstall patches and fixes.

Actually i've seen software thats not an operating system from $200 - $1000. So its pretty cheap. It knows its not genuine because the operating system was not registered.
